Details:
Led by Adrienne Webster, LAC, this compassionate and non-judgmental 6-week support group is designed specifically for moms supporting a child experiencing mental health conditions, substance use, or other significant life adversity.
Session descriptions:
WEEK 1 - Where Are We Now?
A welcoming session to connect, take stock of where each mother is in her experience, and identify what she needs most right now. We’ll talk bout how our roles as parents change when our children are struggling and how those roles continue to evolve as circumstances change.
WEEK 2 - Fear, Hypervigilance, and Learning to Live With Uncertainty
When you’ve lived through repeated crises, it can become difficult to stop waiting for the next one. We’ll explore fear, anticipatory anxiety, hypervigilance, and what it means to begin feeling safe even when you cannot know what happens next.
WEEK 3 - Helping Without Taking Over
How do we support our children without managing, rescuing, fixing, or carrying responsibilities that belong to them? We’ll explore the complicated space between helping and overfunctioning and how to tolerate the discomfort that comes with stepping back.
WEEK 4 - Communication When Everything Feels Loaded
Fear and frustration can make even ordinary conversations difficult. This session will focus on communicating with greater clarity, listening without immediately trying to solve the problem, responding rather than reacting, and knowing when a conversation needs to end.
WEEK 5 - Reclaiming Your Own Life
A child’s struggles can gradually consume a parent’s emotional world. We’ll explore identity outside of caregiving, guilt about experiencing happiness when our children are struggling, and what it means to make room again for relationships, work, creativity, rest, and joy.
WEEK 6 - Trust, Hope, and Moving Forward
Our final session will explore what trust looks like after it has been damaged, how hope can exist without denial, and how to stay connected to our children without making their choices or outcomes the measure of our own well-being. We’ll reflect on what participants want to carry forward and what they may finally be ready to put down.
